The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima is deeply intertwined with the Marian apparitions reported in 1917. Three shepherd children – Lucia dos Santos, Jacinta Marto, and Francisco Marto – claimed to have witnessed the Virgin Mary six times between May and October in a field called Cova da Iria. These apparitions carried messages of peace, prayer, and repentance, becoming a significant event in the Catholic world. The initial response from both religious and secular authorities was skeptical. However, as the crowds attending the apparitions grew, reaching tens of thousands by the final apparition, the event gained widespread attention. Following a canonical investigation, the Catholic Church officially recognized the apparitions as worthy of belief in 1930. The construction of a small chapel on the site of the apparitions began soon after, but the Basilica itself was built later, starting in 1928 and consecrated in 1953. The design was entrusted to Dutch architect Gerardus Samuel van Krieken, and later completed by João Antunes. The Basilica's Neo-Baroque style reflects the architectural trends of the early 20th century. Over the years, the Basilica has been visited by several Popes, including Paul VI, John Paul II (who attributed his survival of an assassination attempt to the Virgin of Fatima), Benedict XVI, and Francis, solidifying its importance as a place of prayer and pilgrimage. The bodies of Jacinta and Francisco Marto, who died young, are entombed inside the Basilica. Lucia dos Santos, who later became a Carmelite nun, was also buried there after her death in 2005. The Basilica stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the enduring legacy of the Fatima apparitions, drawing millions of visitors each year to experience its spiritual significance.
