Construction of the Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 to house the relics of the Three Kings, which had been acquired from Milan. The original architect, Gerhard Morart, envisioned a cathedral that would rival the grandest churches in France. However, construction was halted in 1473 due to financial constraints and a lack of skilled labor, leaving the cathedral unfinished for centuries. For over 400 years, the half-finished cathedral stood as a prominent landmark, a testament to unfulfilled ambition. The unfinished structure became a symbol of Cologne. It wasn't until the 19th century, with the rise of German nationalism and a renewed interest in medieval architecture, that the project was revived. Construction resumed in 1842, based on the original medieval plans. Amazingly, the original plans were rediscovered, allowing the architects to adhere faithfully to the initial vision. The cathedral was finally completed in 1880, more than 600 years after its inception. During World War II, Cologne suffered extensive damage from Allied bombing raids. While much of the city was destroyed, the cathedral miraculously survived, albeit with significant damage. Post-war reconstruction efforts focused on repairing the damage and restoring the cathedral to its former glory. Today, Cologne Cathedral stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and architectural achievement, drawing millions of visitors each year.
