Construction began in 1612, after the canonization of St. Charles Borromeo, under the direction of Onorio Longhi and, after his death, his son Martino Longhi the Younger. The original plan was altered by Pietro da Cortona, and finally completed by Carlo Rainaldi. The façade was designed by Rainaldi.
