History

The history of Igreja Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem is deeply intertwined with the development of Belo Horizonte itself. The church’s origins trace back to the late 19th century when the capital of Minas Gerais was being planned and built. As the city grew, so did the need for a central place of worship. The construction of the present church began in 1913, spearheaded by Bishop Antônio Augusto de Assis. The design was entrusted to the architect Edgard Nascentes Coelho. The church was built on the same location of a simpler chapel, from 1720, dedicated to Our Lady of the Good Voyage, hence the name, which refers to the patron saint of travelers. The initial structure was a small oratory built by travelers praying for a safe journey. In 1897, when Belo Horizonte officially became the state capital, the surrounding area was developed, and a more formal church was envisioned. It took many years to complete, due to financial constraints and logistical challenges, with the first mass being celebrated on August 15th, 1923, even before its complete construction. The church's architectural style reflects the prevailing neo-Gothic aesthetic of the time, embodying a sense of grandeur and spiritual aspiration. Throughout the 20th century, Igreja Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem became a central focal point in Belo Horizonte, both as a religious institution and as a significant landmark. The church has undergone several renovations and restorations to preserve its architectural integrity and ensure its longevity. Today, it stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and the enduring faith of its community. Its significance extends beyond its religious function, as it serves as a cultural and historical monument, attracting visitors from all over the world.
